The gestation period for a Multiworm is approximately two days. During this time the egg will protect itself with a weapon that launches a fluid containing micro-organisms. These organisms consist of various types, some containing acids designed to erode metallic compounds and others containing unusual enzymes that rapidly break down organic matter. Fortunately the range of this weapon is limited. The Alien embryos are not sufficiently advanced to be susceptible to Psionic attacks.  From: Apocalypse Ufopaedia

A large worm-like creature quickly develops inside the protective skin of the Alien egg. This worm appears to contain the embryos of a further four life forms. We cannot tell how the next stage in the life cycle develops from the autopsy results, but the tissues will be useful for our toxicology research.  From: Apocalypse Ufopaedia

The Chrysalis is the form taken on by a matured (and fed) Hyperworm, and is the pupal stage of the Multiworm life cycle. From here, depending on the information fed to it, it will grow into a Brainsucker, Anthropod, Spitter or Popper.

Chrysalides can be found aboard Transporters and Assault Ships. They will not be deployed as part of any infiltration force nor will they be encountered in the alien dimension.

Despite being immobile in Battlescape, Chrysalides are capable of moving from one Mega-Primus building to another. The presence of a Chrysalis will not cause an Organization's infiltration meter to rise, though this will of course change once the Chrysalis grows into another alien. Note that a building investigation will fail to find anything if the only present aliens are Chrysalides and/or Multiworm Eggs.

Tactical Notes
Chrysalides are immobile and defenseless. They pose no threat whatsoever to X-COM agents. Intact Chrysalides will be automatically collected at the end of a successful mission.

Unless ordered to hold their fire, X-COM agents will automatically fire at Chrysalides like they would at any other alien. This can potentially waste ammunition, and stray shots may damage the building they're in (angering the owning Organization), or even hit other X-COM agents in the vicinity. On the other hand, Chrysalides provide a safe way for agents to improve their stats. Furthermore, if X-COM decides to retreat from a mission, it is prudent to destroy any Chrysalides within reach before doing so, to prevent them from evolving into more dangerous aliens.

Chrysalises will not be detected if X-Com searches a building for infestation.

A Chrysalis is the result of a (fed and bloated) single Hyperworm which has progressed to the next stage of the alien lifecycle. It is a coccoon.
UFOs do not keep Chrysalises onboard when aliens are dropped into a building for infestation.
If a UFO has crashed, a Transporter and Assault Ships will each have two Chrysalises.
Chrysalises does not appear in any building within the alien dimension.
An alien infestation spreading across the city from the initially infested building will also move chrysalises, singularly or with other aliens. They may hatch into other lifeforms: Anthropod, Spitter, Popper, or Skeletoid when being moved. Any chrysalises appearing on the battlescape cannot move and will not hatch. Combat

It is not necessary to kill a Chrysalis since all will be recovered alive via the Bio-Transport Module at successful completion. Agents will engage chrysalises in combat but this may be a waste of ammunition. If escaping the battlescape, chrysalises should be killed where possible before exiting to limit further growth of more advanced and dangerous lifeforms which will slow infiltration within the infested building.
