Early Research

In your first consultation with the two brainy gals down at the lab, you are presented with the initial branches of a huge tech tree that will take you from a savage bunch of misfit primitives to the stars. These "Brainers" are quite expensive to sustain, so it's important to understand that discoveries may take a while to unlock, though the infamy earned by research does help defray their costs.

Initial Topics

Early research topics act as the intro to the setting of X-Piratez, while also explaining some mechanics. Most mechanics are explained through bootypedia, so be sure to read through all the articles. Very few topics are deadends, so it is almost never a waste of time to research something. Some notable early researches are:

Recruitment

You want to hire more gals right? You should probably beeline this at the start of the game, so Visit Nearby Town-> Call a Meeting -> Loot Distribution -> Recruitment

Mess Hall

The Mess Hall building is necessary for a number of crucial technologies. You don't have to rush it as there are plenty of other topics for the first few months.

What's The Deal With Tiny Drill?

This is perhaps the most important research in the game. Seriously. This tech lets you make an irreversible choice with lasting consequences, and has its own dedicated page at http://www.ufopaedia.org/index.php/Tiny_Drill_(Piratez)

Get One Frees

Get One Frees refers to a number of research items that quickly finish and give you a bunch of random articles. These include books, discs and many captives. While you can sell them for quick cash, it can be more useful to research them instead. Though a lot of research earned this way seems like just fluff, they often lead to useful techs. Anyway, even the most useless research earns quite a bit of infamy, often more than selling the item or captive would have been worth. It is quite worthwhile to have a couple of brainers dedicated to researching these items. A more detailed list of these items can be found later on this page. Two notable techs that can be obtained this way are Smugglers and Shadowmasters. Smugglers can be obtained fairly reliably from researching B-Boys (and obviously smugglers, but they'll wipe the floor with you early game). Shadowmasters will require a bit more RNG, but you can grind it out by researching captured civilians.

Chateau de la Mort

The most profitable early game good. Just needs apples, which are in quite good supply early on. Requires Apple, Vodka, Fire Walk With Me, Survival and Have a Party!

Workshop

This building is necessary for almost all weapons manufacturing. A commonly missed prerequisite for it is Fire Walk With Me -> Flintlocks & Bombs

!Missions!

Research topics that have exclamation marks unlock new missions. New missions can start spawning the month after they are researched, and will continue to do so till the game ends. Some of these can be incredibly difficult or taxing, so do watch out.
!Monster Hunt! : Kill defenseless creatures for profit! A staple of early game income. No animals have ranged attacks, but be warned that many have devastating melee attacks. Later in the game, you will sometimes run into ratmen or Nomads who have finished the hunt. Both use guns and Nomads are pretty well armed for the early game. Monster hunts are guaranteed to have creatures at the start of the game, but the chance of encountering hunters increases to 60% as time goes by.
!Undersea Treasures! : Very few armours and ranged weapons work underwater, so be warned that these missions can be incredibly dangerous. However, they can be very lucrative, and several items can only be found on undersea missions.
!Organ Grinder! : Exploding architecture, ghouls, bloodhounds and acid rain make this mission incredibly frustrating. They are a reliable source of toxiguns and emeralds and are the only place where ghoul scientists can be found.
!Mansion Invasion! : Attack of the maids! Infiltrate an insanely large and confusing mansion, steal all the loot, and get out before the time limit expires. Gals are restricted to a couple of armours and small items. This mission can earn millions, and are a reliable source of all gems.

*Events*

'*Events*' are research topics that can greatly affect the game. Some of them have negative effects, but are necessary for progression of the game.
*The Mutant Alliance* : Your first step to greatness. Skipped pogroms will start affecting your score after you research this, but it is absolutely essential for advancing the game.
*Stop Targeting Civilian Traffic* : Say goodbye to easy targets. It is a prerequisite for a later tech that stops sway govt missions. Also makes room for more profitable enemy shipping.
*EuroSyndicate Deal* : Allows you to buy expensive and powerful laser weapons, but basically forces you to go on pogroms and destroy your infamy.

Research Tech Tree

To say that the XPiratez Tech Tree is vast is a huge understatement. Truly, it is so gargantuan, that accurately depicting it in one massive diagram may be almost impossible. There is hope, however, as the game has a built-in tech tree that is accessed by either pressing "q" in the geoscape or middle clicking on a research topic. If you so desire, spoilers can be disabled by an option in the advanced tab.

Research Times

A comprehensive list of the time it takes to research a topic can be found at http://www.ufopaedia.org/index.php/Research_Times_(Piratez) Do note that research times vary from 50%-150% like in base XCOM, so don't follow these numbers precisely. Also, a rough estimate of the time is displayed in the tech tree viewer. - is 5, = is 20, and # is 100 (EG. #=-- means the topic takes an average of 130 days)

Prisoners

The Prisoner Processing Table gives a great breakdown on how many techs a prisoner may reveal if put through the lab, as well as a general description of what types of techs they may disclose. Interrogations are a further step of ensuring that enemy leaders give up all of their secrets.

A complete breakdown of all Techs given by each enemy type is at this GoogleDrive Link

Reading

Various printed materials find their way into the hands of our Pirate Gals from time to time. These are often great ways to find out about the world and get a head start on understanding different technologies. Each of these may reveal different topics, some more than others. For a full list of the free techs associated with each item, click the word: [Expand] located to the right of each entry.

Hacking

Figuring out how to access various types of data has opened up a whole new array of informational content. Many of these may require some work by the runts either for decryption (Manufacture>Hacking) or for compiling of personal databases.

Decrypted Data Disks

These little plastic disks are almost unbelievable in the amount of information they can contain. Vessels, missions, nations, weapons, craft technology, and galactic history, its anyone's guess what they will come up with.

Research Base

The Laboratory in the initial hideout is arguably one of the most precious resources in game. No other facility is like it, and it may be impossible to replace. Once its filled with 15 brainers, you have a pretty good research team. However, with the incredible amount of techs begging to be researched (with some very steep costs), there may be a need for other alternatives. Enter the 'Dedicated Research Base'.

Notes

Notes: Total build cost is around $46.6 million, with monthly maintenance at $1.6 million.

This build is conservative in that it adds trap structures (4), radar (1), a prison, vault space, and an extra surgery for the workshop space (runts make xgrog to help offset maintenance costs). Sacrificing these structures and replacing them with studies could net you an increased research capacity of 57 brainers, and 18 runts.

Taking it to the final level might include upgrading studies to computer cores (at 4+ million differential each). With luxury barracks (35 capacity instead of 25) the Ultimate Research base would boast 81 Brainers and 20 Runts (Cost to construct, $136.5 Million).
