Soldiers are the most important combat unit in the X-COM series. They will need to be outfitted with weapons, armour, and other equipment to aid them. As they complete combat missions they gain experience in the form of increased attributes, and can also increase in rank.

Combat Attributes and Status Effects
The following are combat attributes and status effects that are present only during tactical missions. Most combat attributes are normally derived from a soldier's main stats, while status effects can be caused by attacks or map effects such as fire or smoke.

- Current Reaction Level (aka Initiative)
- Energy Recovery
- Height
Status Effects
- Fatal Wounds
- Incapacitation. Soldier becomes immobilized, prevented from moving or loss of control.
- Fire. Soldier catches fire from Incendiary explosions.
Post Combat Conditions
- How Experience is earned
- Recovery time after being injured in battle
- Promotions
